Sambar deer are said to be among the smartest deer in the world to hunt. Along with Fallow & Red deer, they’re considered pests in Australia.
Their meat is nutritious & delicious, and there’s a large population of them around Victoria’s high country. Some hunters aim for quantity, using easier tactics like spotlighting to cull as many pest animals as possible in an outing, others elect to stalk through the bush, searching for tracks & signs to locate & outsmart their quarry for hours until they can close the gap and get a clean shot.
From what I’ve experienced, both camps harvest the deer meat for their friends, families, and pets. It’s not uncommon for hunters to have fridges & freezers full of butchered deer meat, and it’s reassuring to see that the kills aren’t going to waste.
